Encampment

The Odd Fellows Encampment is a higher branch in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. At the heart of the Encampment experience are degrees and teachings that inspire members to broaden their perspectives, strengthen their character, and uphold the mission of universal brotherhood. Encampments also create opportunities for meaningful fellowship through special rituals, social gatherings, and projects that benefit communities in need.

About the Odd Fellows Encampment

The Odd Fellows Encampment is a historic and integral branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), offering members an enriched experience of fellowship, leadership, and community service. Established to further the principles of faith, hope, and charity, the Encampment provides unique opportunities for members to deepen their understanding of the organization's values and traditions.

A Rich History

The Encampment traces its roots back to the early days of the IOOF, when dedicated members sought a more focused platform for advancing the ideals of universal brotherhood. Over the years, it has become a space where Odd Fellows take on additional degrees that symbolize personal growth, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment. Each degree is designed to inspire members to live with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

Membership Requirements

The Encampment is open to members of the IOOF who have completed their Initiatory, Friendship, Love, and Truth degrees. Members who join the Encampment take on additional degrees, including the Patriarchal, Golden Rule, and Royal Purple degrees, which encourage personal and collective development. Membership is built on mutual respect and a commitment to the IOOF’s mission of “Friendship, Love, and Truth.”

The Degrees in the Encampment are:

  • Patriarchal Degree which aims to teach the lessons of transparent honesty, domestic purity, genuine hospitality and unfeigned righteousness.
  • Golden Rule Degree which aims to teach good will, tolerance, and true brotherhood. It also teaches that members should unite with the virtuous and good irrespective of country, religion, or politics in the discharge of duties which all agree are paramount to universal peace and cooperation.
  • Royal Purple Degree which aims to teach alertness and determination as basis for a possible success in the journey called life.

Encampment Activities

Encampments provide a unique mix of ceremonial, educational, and social opportunities. Members participate in:

  • Specialized Rituals: Ceremonies and teachings tied to the Encampment's advanced degrees.
  • Leadership Development: Training and mentorship opportunities that foster personal growth.
  • Community Projects: Coordinated efforts to support local communities through charity and service.
  • Social Events: Gatherings that strengthen bonds among members, such as dinners, cultural outings, and celebrations.

Fun Facts:
Some U.S. towns have IOOF cemeteries, where members’ graves are marked with the Triple Links symbol. These sites, like those in California, preserve the order’s legacy in local history.
